Fuck it, I'll stick my neck out. That kid isn't sneering. That's a confusion/anxiety grimace. A weird old man comes up to you in public banging a drum and people turn cameras on you -- QUICK how do you react?

I really don’t feel like it was that benign, but I do see discomfort in his face, too. But it appears he fights it and gets smug. Also, answer: walk away. (And maybe I missed the part where the dude walked up. Never saw that.)

https://twitter.com/mariajudy_/status/1086681831804674048 … Kid is in a tight crowd, you can see a loose group of activists slowly approach (I hesitate to say 'creeping up'), kid has no way to retreat. The activists know exactly what they're doing.

If he really was singing some kind of “heal the anger” chant, it makes some sense. But his approach changes things. But, man, I think the cheating-up is just something I’d never have done to an elderly person. I’d make way. I’d be curious maybe.

A group of men (there are other activists clipped out of frame, dude was the point of a wedge) approach you in public, yelling incoherently. Cameras are pointed at you. You don't have room to escape. You'll be respectful and curious? I'd be angry and terrified.

The drummer wasn’t yelling. And he wasn’t threatening. Look, I’m not that kid and I don’t know what he felt. But I’m 90% sure I can identify smugness. I’d bet it’s mixed. But I rewatched; I didn’t read his face wrong, at least not entirely.

I rewatched and that is deer-in-the-headlights fear. Kid is paralyzed.

The decisive tell for me is that at the beginning the kid blinks along with the drum strikes. That's a reflex action: the kid expects to be hit.
