I just mostly copied the recipe on the choco chip bag. I was a little short on flour so I put some oatmeal in.

I never said they were good

I used to make cookies a lot but this time I just copied a recipe off the back of the chip bag with slight modifications.
-
The big secret is that there's no secret, as long as the dough is stiff enough. 1 cup flour 1 cup sugar 1 stick butter, dash of salt, half a teaspoon of baking powder is a perfectly good recipe and you can tweak it forever. Add vanilla, peanut butter, whatever.
-
That base gets you something like shortbread. Add eggs to get something softer/chewier. But the core is flour, sugar, fat, salt, leavening. Cookies aren't finicky the way bread is, they're hard to mess up.
-
Actually one note: butter is about 15% water. If you use oil, you'll want to add teaspoon or two of water or milk. You need a little bit of moisture or you get bricks.
