cf. the reign of 'lo-fi' in college radio in the 90s. 80s college radio was supposed to be innovative, eclectic and brilliant, but by the time I moved to Athens in the mid-90s, the college station was so locked into lo-fi aesthetics that it was parochial and unlistenable.
