It has not been my experience that smarter people are socially weirder. Among MIT physicists, for example, there are some socially weird/awkward people, but there are also some very socially adept people. I don't see much correlation at all.https://twitter.com/Meaningness/status/1079405531607883776 …

      Brian Skinner added,

“Be smart enough. But not too smart that you are weird.” The “prior intuitions” here are more like “a blatantly invariant fact of nature” if you’ve hung around the MIT math department student lounge, for example. https://twitter.com/razibkhan/status/1079367676022018048 … pic.twitter.com/TSoY71Ks0Q

Among a group selected very strongly for intelligence and less strongly -- but still strongly -- for social skills (navigating bureaucracy, academic politics, tenure tracking), one nevertheless sees people with weak social skills. This seems like evidence for the claim.

I see two (anecdotal) pieces of evidence that may not fit this interpretation. One is that the range of social skills among successful (say, physics) academics is very wide. It really seems to be as broad as the range among the public in general.

You encounter people who are gifted at getting others to like them and at enticing others to want to do things that they themselves want.

The other piece of evidence is that social awkwardness or unpleasantness seems to be much more prominent among the old and tenured. This suggests, to me, that social weirdness is enabled largely by impunity or lack of consequence.

Or that the environment has become much less forgiving for the neurodivergent (which would be consistent with the growth of administrative power).

I have, in general, been worried about the question of whether all of us young physicists are going to end up turning into the weird alligators that are our senior colleagues, or whether that generation really was different from us in a basic way.

FWIW I am more interested in the possibility of creating an alligator farm where weirdos can get on with doing geek stuff without interference from people whose goals and expertise center on skilled social interaction.

Anyway, this is all getting hand-wavy, so let me make a prediction: I predict that the prevalence of autism among tenured and tenure-track faculty is at least 5%.

Estimates vary but occurence in the general population is less than 2% (https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/data.html …), and it has a negative correlation with IQ overall, so this would be evidence for my claim.

Full disclosure: As a strong teacher, a decent researcher, and an autist, I dropped out of academia because I couldn't navigate the modern academic job application process.

Similar disclosure: I am also a good teacher and a decent researcher. Pretty sure I'm not autistic, but I usually test pretty far along the spectrum. It remains to be seen whether I will stick in academia, but if I don't it probably won't be for social reasons.
