Interesting to play Chrono Trigger after spending a couple of weeks on FFXII. Chrono Trigger's graphics are like being stabbed in the eyes with Lego blocks, the music is tinny, the interface is an ordeal, and it's far more enjoyable than the thin gray gruel FFXII serves up.

A phenomenon I first noticed with the Civilization series is that frequently, improving technology and increasing budgets dilute the game rather than enrich it. Replacing three panels of dialogue with a 5 minute CGI is not actually an improvement.

The bigger budgets usually means investors and producers have a bigger stake in it so they feel the need to medal with it despite not knowing a thing about game design

Yeah, I think cutscenes are a good example of something that looks good to non-players, makes for better ads, etc. but can really interfere with play.
