Interesting to play Chrono Trigger after spending a couple of weeks on FFXII. Chrono Trigger's graphics are like being stabbed in the eyes with Lego blocks, the music is tinny, the interface is an ordeal, and it's far more enjoyable than the thin gray gruel FFXII serves up.
It really struck me when Civ 3 came out and it was Civ 2 + semi-animated bobblehead advisors because...multimedia CD-rom something something. They added nothing and degraded game performance, but...multimedia!

Civ III was far and away the weakest edition of the franchise, it was the opposite of Civ I in terms of “magic”

Every installment adds more filler without adding more fun to the core mechanic. It's *possible* to improve the formula -- SMAC did it, and there's a whole community of total Civ 4 conversions that did it. But Civ N mostly just breaks the interface of Civ N-1.

Well, I think there have been a few more things that have added fun to the core dynamic: localized resources, cultural boundaries, and traveling caravans I would put in there. But yes, the added filler - particularly in animating the world leaders is something of a waste
