Tacti-cool is an extremely male-coded form of pure consumerism in a way other types aren't so much. Bodybuilding is male-coded but requires effort, survivalism can be pure consumerism but isn't as masculine.

We didn't have makeup/selfie culture (which I'd draw as a female-coded analogue) to the same extent even five years ago, either.

Internet has facilitated the formation of narrower and more intense subcultural identities. You can be best buddies with five other obsessives scattered across North America. You can have a YouTube channel with 1000 followers instead of being the weird dude down the block.

That said, tacti-cool culture isn't new. Soldier of Fortune's heyday was the 70s and 80s. Cheap magazine ads for Dim Mak, stun batons, and Chuck Norris karate jeans always did well.
