It's a hard problem, but, yeah. Criminalizing (specific kinds of) rudeness is creating literal privileges. Costs and side effects seem pretty bad here.

There was a person, K, in my old internet circles from about 20y - 15y back. Several years after leaving our group, K transitioned. Then K (apparently, trial by community, we only heard thirdhand) raped somebody at a convention. Then K changed names *again*.

Our only contact with K was pre-transition. If we'd never heard about K's later history, would it still be dead-naming? And what about K's victim? Is it dead-naming to link K to that person and that community? These are weird questions but they're not hypotheticals.
