Counterpoint: the midcentury Broadway musical (and its continuation into animation by Disney) is one of America's great artistic contributions along with comics and jazz. Like comics, it combines multiple art forms into a hybrid greater than the parts. (Though WSS is just OK.)

Counter-counterpoint: Broadway musicals didn't do anything which hadn't been done already with the invention of theater by the Greeks, who used speech, music, and movement together to cement memory before writing. Saying "musicals are bad" is giving in to lazy visual learning.
