"*With the casualties due to armed conflicts factored out*, even in conflict-ridden regions such as the Middle East, the U.S. rate is worse." If you ignore the ways young men shoot each other in the Middle East, the US rate is worse. This is why you look at raw homicide rates, rather than "gun death" rates. A lot of those "gun death" numbers they pull out of the void that is their ass lump in suicides. That 30K/year number quoted by MDM and others? ~22K of that is suicide alone.

When you examine raw homicide numbers, we still have one of the higher numbers amongst civilized countries, but it's still a far, far cry from many other countries. And event amongst our numeric neighbors, it's only fractions higher. Statistical anomaly at that point.

And of course this doesn't factor in things like geographic density, population density, ethnic density/diversity, and more. That's another large can of worms to dig into.

Yep. I think this report doesn't count suicides but it makes lots of other weird mistakes.

I think it does. Unadjusted US homicide rate is about 5/100k. Only maybe half are done with a firearm.

Well, now I don't know. Best numbers I can find say 11,000 murders by firearm in 2017. That's 3.4/100k. So I have no idea where NPR is getting their numbers!

Check out the FBI crime stats. Compare them to the UNODC stats.

I've been studying FBI stats for like 10 years now. I looked at the site NPR cites but it was impenetrable. You'd think they could have linked to the specific graphs rather than the base site!
