"*With the casualties due to armed conflicts factored out*, even in conflict-ridden regions such as the Middle East, the U.S. rate is worse." If you ignore the ways young men shoot each other in the Middle East, the US rate is worse. (Emphasis mine.) This article is a goldmine of Fox Butterfieldisms. "The U.S. gun violence death rate is also higher than in nearly all countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including many that are among the world's poorest." Yes, because the poorest use machetes.

The best chart here, though, is this one, which is ridiculous in many ways. The main problem is that it covers a very short period and is therefore biased toward tiny countries. The population of Oman is 4.4 million, Singapore is 5.6 million, and Iceland is 350 thousand.pic.twitter.com/yEVgfcBv4s

This chart is telling you that Oman had two 'violent gun deaths' in 2017, Singapore had one, and Iceland had...uh...1/4th of a death. Somehow. Using a single year for your analysis means the bottom of the list will have a lot of tiny countries that got lucky.

Absent a list of tiny countries that got unlucky in the opposite way, this is ridiculously stupid and unworthy of your usual standards.

No. Say there are 50 tiny countries who are small enough that they have a decent chance of having a near-zero murder rate in a given year simply by random chance (because a Poisson process with small mean is right-skewed).

Then picking out the lowest rates in a given year is meaningless, because some number of them are going to get 'lucky'. The chart is comparing the US rate (large population, therefore relatively robust) to lottery winners. That's the stupid.

This list compares the lowest ten rates in the world to the US. There are plenty of tiny countries that got unlucky in the opposite way -- and they're not the bottom ten entries on the list, because of that! Come the fuck on.

Also note, to repeat, that Iceland's rate is literally a mistake, and cannot be 0.07. In other years its (total) murder rate has been as high as 1.8/100k. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22288564 …)
