Man, that garbage 71% statistic is getting everywhere. The ADL report specifically notes that non-'far-right' extremist killings are probably undercounted by their methodology. Furthermore, the definition of 'extremist killings' used is absurd and misleading.https://twitter.com/NYTmag/status/1058736230874181632 …

The Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism has reported that 71% of the extremist-related fatalities in the United States between 2008 and 2017 were committed by members of the far right or white-supremacist movements. https://nyti.ms/2QfD0fp

Two factors combine to make ADL's figure misleading. First, it counts any violent crime by a 'far-right' figure as an 'extremist killing'. A member of a prison gang kills his wife for cheating on him? ADL counts it as an 'extremist killing'.

Second, members of white prison gangs are counted as far-right/white-supremacist. This sounds obvious on a first pass, right? But most American prison gangs are race-segregated. A murderer from the Latin Kings or Folk Nation isn't going to show up on ADL's report.

White prison gangs use Nazi/racist iconography because that's how you demonstrate that you're white and dangerous in the US. They have nothing to do with Richard Spencer, skulls just look cool.

Footnote: What I'm calling 'extremist killing' is called "extremist-related murder" in the report, I was condensing for space reasons. Original report here:https://www.adl.org/resources/reports/murder-and-extremism-in-the-united-states-in-2017 …

What possible incentive could the ADL have to exaggerate here?!

The ADL report is less bad than the takeaway all the bluechecks got from it. But that's part of the game, I guess.

Apparently the ADL press released helped to stoke the fire. Though of course members of the media each have joint and several liability for not doing their jobs.

Yeah, distill away the hedging and you get something much worse. Figure 3 in part 2 of the report (source of the 71%) is so much worse than the rest, so of course that's what everyone lifted.

Starting at 2008 is nonsense. Look up "Background Report Ideological Motivations of Terrorism in the United States, 1970-2016" by UMD. Immediately before 2008 most attacks were left wing or eco terrorists. Muslims are still #1 overall even ignoring 9/11, which of course they do

The most blatant example of that was the New America study that started counting on Sept. 12, 2001.

I might buy it if it was done by like, the Amish, but it wasn't an outlier. It follows an established trend.
