I've been avoiding comment on Warren's motives but I can imagine mentioning it to colleagues in the 70s and having it snowball as affirmative action got to be a thing and just...letting it happen. Nobody imagined this shit would be a life-or-death bitter struggle in 50 years.

Sometime in the late 70s, I erred while filling out a standardized test form: indicated myself as "native American" or whatever term was being used, but was white-bread lower-middle class. I was inundated by offers from institutions of higher learning.

Yeah, I put 'other' on some form or other because I was irritated by the whole thing, same deal.

I've been thinking the same thing: you really can't expect much different when "always support the little guy" meets "every other TV show you grew up on is a Western." Boomer problems.

There is a bit more to it than that, I think. The obvious bit: she knowingly lied about the status in order to secure a professor gig. The underneath: the Native rights movement was big in her circles (http://theconversation.com/the-radical-story-of-the-native-american-liberation-movement-50-years-on-97824 …), so doubtful this was some accident on her part.
