This doesn't seem exactly analogous, because only because I didn't specify my question well enough. I'm wondering if there's an efficient way to divide the volume equally, not to produce exactly the correct number of segments

I think it's equivalent to producing a regular 7-gon, which is formally tricky (eg not doable with straightedge and compass alone)

3 apples instead of 1 is a useless distraction if you want equal portions. Finding 3/7ths of an apple is as hard as finding 1/7th; the denominator is the problem.

I thought about that, but it seemed like it might make a difference if you can physically rearrange and rotate each apple, assuming you can cut more than one apple at once as a single "cut"

If you just want approximation, there's a pretty straightforward way: Stack the apples, take two cuts parallel to the axis and to each other, such that you get nine pieces, where the left and right pieces all have the same volume and the center slices have 1/3rd that much.

Right, yeah! But getting it exactly even, and generalizable, was something that was bothering me to think about

All that matters is the denominator of the (fully reduced) fraction. If you had 7 apples to start with then there's no problem, because 7/7 = 1/1
