Halfway through Altered Carbon. It has the usual affliction of Netflix shows: the pacing gets slower and slower as the series progresses. Maybe they should just commission fewer episodes.

I could do with less of the (torture and regular) porn, but I guess that's the HBO standard now. I have a crackpot theory that porniness lowers average acting quality, by imposing an extra filter on the selection process -- actors always needed good faces and good voices...

This seems correct. Consider the level of acting that you get in pro wrestling, where the selection process is highly weighted to looks and, these days, athleticism. Once in a while you get Dwayne Johnson! Mostly you get giant steroid monsters and cosmetic surgery enthusiasts.

Yeah, it's not completely disabling -- look at how Chinese cinema is selected for athletics -- but eg 1960s Sean Connery would be considered a lumpy schlub today.
