Interesting thread, but could use a comparison to music. Music is in no danger of declining any time soon, but music associated with academia is still a wasteland. Fair point, I was thinking of poetry in a broader sense (and particularly Norse and Greek epics), but I suspect the distinctions stem more from modes of technological production than culture -- traditional English poetry has to rely on the text alone.
