Linus stepping aside is one thing. Adopting that particular CoC is something else entirely.

(Linus stepping aside isn't *nothing*; if the genders were reversed and a handful of male right-wing activists working with a national magazine got a creative, awkward woman to step down from the work she spent her life on...but the CoC is the smoking gun here.)

I really don't see how a handful of activists got Linus to step down. Is honest introspection and behavioral change really that unlikely? Or do we now assume that even he has no agency?

Did you see the New Yorker article? They explicitly took credit.

Ah. No. I don't read... really anything most people would consider relevant these days. I'll look it up.

But Linus absenting himself is secondary to the CoC they adopted. The usual suspects declared victory and jihad (ie, naming other people who have to be disappeared) immediately.

It seems to me that "real programmers are maximally obnoxious and insulting" is as tribally conformant a view as anything supported by a CoC. The idea of Coding Culture as ideally neutral is meaningless.

Not sure what that has to do with anything I've said.

There's a swindle embedded in the 'nothing is neutral, therefore X wins' you seem to be implying here, but I'll tap out now.
