I really don't see how a handful of activists got Linus to step down. Is honest introspection and behavioral change really that unlikely? Or do we now assume that even he has no agency?

But Linus absenting himself is secondary to the CoC they adopted. The usual suspects declared victory and jihad (ie, naming other people who have to be disappeared) immediately.
It seems to me that "real programmers are maximally obnoxious and insulting" is as tribally conformant a view as anything supported by a CoC. The idea of Coding Culture as ideally neutral is meaningless.
