It's hard to control the kernel itself but it's easy to control the process governing the kernel, which is what's happening now. This is a purge.

What I gather is that GPL 2 (unlike version 3) doesn't explicitly preclude revocation of contributions, but realistically it would be a legal dead end. Could still be effective lawfare, perhaps, with a wealthy enough backer.
