The idea that the law should impose itself violently upon all, but only those who have spent years and tens of thousands of dollars to be ordained as priests of the law should comment on this fact, is part of why people hate us so much. And they are right to do so.pic.twitter.com/SKWBpJ1eFm

If you want to discuss the law, do your research and talk to subject matter experts. Don’t be stupid, and take no pride in ignorance. But do NOT accept it if those experts tell you that you have no right to speak; the law is of you, for you, and imposed upon you. It is yours.

I'm still pissed about the Twitter-famous right-leaning lawyer who blew up at a friend of mine and I for discussing freedom of speech *as a philosophical/moral value*. Said friend actually is a (non-practicing) lawyer, to boot. But we weren't talking about the law!

It’s an odd negative image of Sovereign Citizen insanity: in the same way that some people think that law operates like sorcery to shape the world, some lawyers seem to think that other people discussing law /philosophy/civics are plotting to steal the source of their power.

And I suppose insofar as some people got into it largely for exclusionary social prestige, authority, and the chance to put “esq” behind their names, that’s actually kind of true. Ours is a house of insecurity.

Seems like most advanced degree holders eventually outgrow that crap. I don't flash my PhD around unless it's actually relevant. But I think arrogance is kind of a job requisite for lawyers (and even more so for doctors).

I don't appreciate doctors' arrogance, but they're in a line of work where their fuckups kill people. If they weren't arrogant, they'd break.

True, and I’m more willing to forgive it among criminal defense lawyers for the same reason. Where things break down are legal academics, contract attorneys, or family law practitioners who are like this, which is closer to “podiatrist with a God complex” territory.
