Yeah, that scans. I would have pegged it as "overly analytical and hyper-sensitive", in that she's measuring these casual interactions against her entire career and drawing the most uncharitable conclusions.
I was once in a conversation with a CEO and the conversation drifted into private air travel, which I have no background in, but I still recognized that he wasn't trying to prove something about his status to me - it was just a big thing in his life at that point.
Kinda amazing that you can get to PHD level and still assess all your casual conversations through the lens of "is this person paying appropriate respect to my self-assigned status".
I wouldn't have expected that, but then most of the best PHDs I know have managed to remain humble and focused on the work.
Graduate degree oversupply means maybe 4 out of 5 PhDs sacrificed a long period of their lives and have nothing to show for it but the letters after their name. That breeds a particular kind of status anxiety.
Honestly that would break me too, if I took that kind of risk (and accumulated that kind of debt!) and not find myself way ahead of the pack. I think you're right on the money there.
