Food comes in packaging...

Meat packages leak, produce is frequently loose or in net bags. Either way, runoff collects in the bag, rots, smears onto the next package.
-
They usually put meat packages in a plastic bag at the checkout for this reason. If something does leak, wash your bag. No one's going to leave meat juice festering in their bag and then set unbagged produce on that. People have been using reusable bags in the rest of the world.

paper bags decompose many times faster tho
-
Paper bags are fine, they were phased out because of the *previous* idiot green hysteria. 'Reusable' bags are bad, though.

They don't really decompose. The sun breaks them down int smaller and smaller pieces, eventually microscopic. Your body is loaded with these long molecules by now

If you use reusable shopping bags you almost have to buy the cotton ones that can readily be laundered. I just save the disposable plastic ones: regional-chain grocery stores have recycling bins, as does Walmart.

Plastic bags are one of the most frequently repurposed household items. (I use them all a second time at home) How many trips to the grocery store do 'reusable' grocery bags need to make, to offset the cost in both energy and dollars of a basic plastic bag? Probably hundreds.
