The thing is, 'white' is a fake category, a construct of USian political culture. But 'PoC' is *even more fake* -- it's just the negation of 'white'. 'Every activity but stamp collecting' isn't much of a hobby.

Whiteness feels pretty international to me. There are words for it in many languages: gringo, farang, vellaikkaran, gora, gaijin, gweilo, angmoh, mat salleh... I would say fictional rather than fake; it’s invented just like money is

Those are literally different words in different cultural contexts, though. They may describe overlapping groups of people, but eg 'white' doesn't mean 'gaijin' because one means 'insider in North America' and the other 'outsider in Japan'.

The key thing about 'white' in USian discourse is it served as a rhetorical excuse to fold different kinds of immigrants (eg Germans early on, Italians and Irish later) into the (originally English) national identity. A word like 'gweilo' serves a very different purpose.

If whiteness feels international it's because the modern international ruling class is dominated by the American ruling class.

(There's a parallel line of development in the attempts to forge a pan-European identity. But that's a political-cultural development significantly influenced by post-WWII American hegemony!)

At some point, I suspect Asians will also be folded into the American "white" category, strange as that may sound to us now.
