The creation of 'PoC' as a political identity is coalition-building, but more precisely it's an attempt to keep East and South Asians and Hispanics (eg Cubans) from the 'white' coalition. I'm not unsympathetic but it does result in a lot of silly ideology.

There was a moment in the late 60s when it looked like the black-white split in America might start to dissolve itself culturally, but that failed. Instead we got institutionalized separate-but-equal cultures -- every ethnicity gets its own cable channels!
