<Former Mormon Theology Activates> Baptisms for the dead do not make someone a member of the Mormon Church, they allow a person on the other side (paradise or spirit prison which exists before judgement) to choose to be a member. They are not added to membership records.

I mean, it's all fake but the dead people ceremony requires on dead person consent to be efficacious. If Mormons do a proxy ceremony for you, you will be free in their worldview to reject the ceremony from beyond the grave.
