You know the worst thing for me about the madness of crowds? People get caught up in and *believe* the hyperbole, thus perhaps hurt more by the exaggeration than they would ever be by reality, however bad it may be.

The thing is, I am not discounting the *feelings*. The feelings are real. They may simply not be in response to reality as perceived by anyone not in the in-group.
