Universally toxic compared to...what, Hollywood? Washington? Sports? Journalism? Universities? https://twitter.com/Aelkus/status/1020791620260835328 …

OK, grim story coming. I had a friend I'd met playing Vampire LARPs back in the 90s. He'd had a rough start, been in with skinheads, but he was trying to straighten out. Xmas vacation 1996 I was hanging out with him, met his mom and stepfather. Seemed nice.

A few days after Christmas, his mom killed his stepfather, wounded his stepbrother, and then killed herself with a shotgun. He got hooked on crack cocaine and I lost touch with him. Fandom was probably the single healthiest thing in his life.

There are incredibly horrific things going on behind the scenes everywhere, all the time. People live in hell and you don't see their flesh melting, smell their hair burning, because nobody's going to tell you their stories. You hear rumors about the stuff you know best.

Stuff associated with the Internet seems especially bad because it's well-documented and can be communicated easily. Real life is equally monstrous, it's just harder to see. The end, no moral.

(Internet does make it easier for abusers to find victims. But I don't think it increases the number of abusers that much, and if anything the abusers concentrate in movements pretending to fight abuse. "Fandom" is more victim than victimizer.)
