Reasonable, and the authors are very smart people, but I don't have a strong opinion on the subject. (My own suspicion is that interstellar travel is just completely unfeasible, and every alien civilization lives and dies around its home star.)

Silence seems tougher to account for than absent visitors. My pet has long been that intelligent life functions like a time-bomb -- that some threshold of technology we have yet to reach inevitably dooms the project, every time. Could be wishful thinking.
