New pinned tweet: General rule on my political tweets is that I rarely care about the object-level issue one way or the other. I'm interested in the little gnarly details of human group formation and how that's evolving under Internet pressure (in a terrifying way).

🤖 Becoming an outstanding case study in the ways AI researchers fool themselves: because so many different, common types of mistakes were made in a single seemingly-spectacular paper.

For those who (like me) were interested in the "GPT can ace MIT" paper, Here's a great short writeup by three MIT EECS seniors explaining the many things wrong with analysis. dub.sh/gptsucksatmit

New @DataColada post providing evidence of fraud in the work of Harvard Professor Francesca Gino. datacolada.org/109 I can't say I am surprised by this one, but it is very good she was caught! This is part 1 out of 4.

A recent work from claimed GPT4 can score 100% on MIT's EECS curriculum with the right prompting. My friends and I were excited to read the analysis behind such a feat, but after digging deeper, what we found left us surprised and disappointed. dub.sh/gptsucksatmit 🧵

Youtube just rolled out a new algorithm of shit. Suddenly my feed is full of garbage videos with the words 'Atlanta' and 'Georgia' in the titles, even though I set my location to Japan.

It's funny how, no matter what the field, you see the same pattern of "practitioner starts to despise the more popularly-loved things belonging to that field."

These posters have the aesthetic of something hung in a hippie printing shop for thirty years, soaking up dust and smoke, getting sun-bleached and yellow with age. Low-quality paper, crappy vegetable inks, ugly palette choices. 'aesthetic vision'?
Quote Tweet
Until Republicans have an aesthetic vision to rival this, they will always be on the losing side of culture and politics.

What a weird question! The mods throwing tantrums right now mostly didn't. They hijacked subreddits created by others -- and that's completely irrelevant. Reddit owns Reddit, full stop. Plenty of options if you want to own your own messageboard elsewhere.

Do you... think that Reddit itself created these subreddits?

Its niche is nominally lobbying for the VA, so it's parallel to public service unions in that respect, and in practice it pushes whatever DNC is pushing this week, also like public service unions.

Department of No Matter What Your Deal Is: There are a lot of these Gastroenterologists For Jesus astroturf orgs setting up pseudo-personalized permission structures for various sub-sub-subdemographics, but most of them piggyback on labor unions. This one is extra-fake.

The piece leads with Extremely Racist subs but by the time you get to the purge of r/wetpussy, it's clearly just about making the world safe for neo-Puritan sensibilities. Never mind all the neutral subs that Vox doesn't mention that got subverted.

RevBrand theme department: I do disagree with the way 'freaks' is being used here; as I always say, "freaks create, progs occupy". These mods may be freaks of some sort, but they *act* as hyperconformist enforcers, ultranormies, Senders in Burroughs' schema.

Open, volunteer run websites often become dominated by freaks, because normal people simply don’t have the time and motivation to get in long battles for control of online spaces. Wikipedia has a very similar issue, as anyone who actually edits it is aware. twitter.com/reddit_lies/st…

I mean...mods don't own the site and they sure as hell don't own the name Apple. Their authority is entirely delegated. Closing "indefinitely" is like deleting your account and expecting them to keep the name reserved.
