Happy Birthday Your Majesty! Today HM The Queen celebrates her 96th birthday, and we're sharing this image from HM's 90th birthday service held here at St Paul's in 2016. This year, Her Majesty will become the first British monarch in history to celebrate a #PlatinumJubilee.
We have been privileged to welcome Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to St Paul's many times throughout her life.

On this night in 1940, during the Blitz, the iconic image "St Paul Survives" was taken by Herbert Mason. The photo shows the Cathedral dome amid the devastation caused by a heavy night of bombing. Showers of incendiary bombs fell on the cathedral and the surrounding area.

Great Tom, the St Paul’s hour bell, tolled today between 14:00 and 14:55 to mark the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. It was last tolled in 2002 to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

#OTD 1940, 28 bombs hit St Paul's during one night of the Blitz. Fires were bravely put out by the St Paul's Watch; volunteers who included clergy, staff & local residents. In the early hours of the morning, photographer Herbert Mason took the iconic image, 'St Paul's Survives.'

#OTD 1897: A Service of Thanksgiving was held on the West steps of St Paul's to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Due to her frailty she remained in her carriage throughout the ceremony, where the clergy joined her.

John Donne, poet and former Dean of St Paul's, was born on this day, 1572. His imposing statue in the Cathedral is the only one to survive, unscathed, from the Great Fire of 1666.

#OnThisDay 1874, Winston Churchill was born. As Prime Minister during WW2’s relentless Blitz on London - a city battered but not bowed - he saw St Paul’s as a great symbol of hope, decreeing "At all costs, St Paul's must be saved”.
And though it was close, St Paul’s was saved.

Our bells are leaving the Cathedral for the first time since their arrival 140 years ago. They are heading off to be restored so they can continue ringing for many years to come!
#OTD 1900, HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was born. The Cathedral enjoyed her steadfast support over many years, as patron of the St Paul's Watch during WW2 & later first patron of the Friends. HM also celebrated birthdays & other occasions here, such as her 80th birthday.
The Bishop of London and the Chapter have appointed as Chancellor of St Paul's. Paula is one of today’s best known New Testament theologians and will have responsibility for the Cathedral’s theological and learning programme.
