What can YOU do? Write to the Sweetwater Jaycee's, who run the event, at 810 E Broadway St., Sweetwater, TX 79556 and ask them to convert the roundup to a no-kill festival. Let's help stop the slaughter and bring down the wall of shame. 6/6 nhm.ac.uk/wpy/gallery/20

All this week, I will post more of these amazing kids' letters, with #RattlesnakeRebrand. Huge kudos to my honors class for organizing the campaign, for funding it, and especially all the teachers, parents, and kids who made this happen. 5/6

Roundups are inhumane. Many other roundups have been converted to no-kill festivals, and that is exactly what kids are asking Sweetwater residents to do. Kids like this kindergartener got straight to the point. 3/6

Right now, hunters are pumping gas into dens to extract hibernating rattlesnakes, poisoning the land in the process. On March 10-12, thousands of rattlesnakes will be beheaded and skinned alive (their brains function for hours afterward). rattlesnakeroundups.com 2/6

This week, over 900 households in Sweetwater, Texas are getting handwritten letters from kids asking them to help stop the slaughter at their town's annual rattlesnake roundup. I was struck by this quote, which is 100% spot on. 1/6

If universities insist on paying PhD students below the poverty line, they need to acknowledge the reality that students canβt make ends meet with the stipend alone.
Even without raising stipends, the university can support students from unprivileged backgroundsβ¦

Folks coming back from #JMIH remember to test yourself for the next few days (especially if going to other conferences!) I'm doing the same!

Several #JMIH2022 participants have recently reported testing positive for Covid-19.
Please test yourselves and monitor potential symptoms. PCR tests are more reliable than rapid tests. Consider reducing face-to-face interactions until you're certain you haven't contract covid.

It was unexpectedly rewarding to give a talk on the biases we face in the sciences & the colonial history that still influences the field of herpetology & the zoo profession today. I was/am touched by the positive responses from you & others at #JMIH2022 . Thank you.

To anyone headed to #JMIH22, I highly recommend taking the bus from the airport to the hotel. It's $2 cash, exact change. There's a stop right outside baggage claim and a direct route to the conference. Google Maps worked best for me to plan. Please RT.

If anyone thinks that Roe v Wade being overturned wonβt effect you in the STEM world youβre wrong. Your diversity initiatives to bring in more female faculty wonβt mean shit when the state your in doesnβt respect people with uteruses.

Not to be dramatic but I couldnβt care less about anything science related at the current moment. Rights were stripped away from myself and everyone woman in this country today. The Supreme Court justices have made it clear that this isnβt where theyβll stop.

I often have to remind myself - the skills you have *are* valuable. Theyβre not the βeasy things everyone can already do,β you worked hard to get here and so did other people. Youβre not less than because your specialties are different from someone elseβs.

I have to register for 1 dissertation credit to defend my PhD this summer. Is it normal for your department to expect you to pay (out-of-pocket) for the tuition and fees? Asking #AcademicTwitter because I didn't know this was a thing.

I will be President-Elect in 2022 and President in 2023 for the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, the scientific society that has been the most important network for my work since I joined in 1999. I genuinely love the @IchsAndHerps and can't wait to serve.
