Extremely proud that our ideas and technology are adopted by Volkswagen to protect access to their newest cars. Great success of ETH Zurich and 3DB Access teams in doing research and standardizing 802.15.4z, and especially its secure LRP mode.

We are still early in the process of pc chairing but seeing pc members redoing proofs, running experiments and generally going the extra mile, makes me feel great about the community and hopeful that we can deliver an excellent program.

I guess we will be buying some iPhones to at least check out the modulation they use. How they process it, how they calculate the ToA and if it is really secure might be somewhat harder to figure out.

Excellent work at showing a flip side of this interplay between physical and logical from the group of . It shows how assumptions about physical layer integrity enable attacks on data integrity in LTE:

Typically we 1) define the physical layer and then 2) add security on upper layers. This works for data integrity and confidentiality. It doesn't work for secure ranging. Attacks on ranging happen due to physical layer design irrespective of what is done on upper layers.

It would still be good to have more transparency in this space. Companies like driving some of these efforts should be more open with designs so that community can evaluate them. For more formal treatment of this topic see our upcoming S&P paper:

At we presented UWB secure ranging for the first time preventing distance enlargement attacks. In addition to standardization in 802.15.4z, new consortia was recently formed . More work needed to analyze these proposals.

LRP&HRP secure ranging is being standardized in IEEE 802.15.4z and in Car2Car Comm. Consortium. LRP and HRP chips are being deployed. This work aims to inform those efforts. (joint work with my students/postdoc P. Leu, M. Singh, M. Roeschlin and new colleague ).

Our paper describing this design space, showing why LRP can be secured and why using correlation-based HRP is risky will appear at IEEE S&P20: Message Time of Arrival Codes: A Fundamental Primitive for Secure Distance Measurement Preprint soon at:

Last year et al. proposed 802.15.4z UWB secure ranging in HRP mode but didn't fully disclose the design. Now announced secure UWB ranging Still no details/no sec.analysis. In comparison secure ranging in LRP mode has public design/sec. analysis
