I want to call the QT below the turiya-only or nondual-only school of enlightenment. My take: 1. Sainthood is a worthy journey & asymptotic ideal. 2, 3. It's hard, and people self-deceive, lie, or are simply mistaken. 4. Yes, "purification." 5. No, one-step "awakeness."https://twitter.com/KennethFolk/status/1164971843033473024 …

It seems like a lot of people have given up on meditation being a tool for a particular type of transformation, and, I mean it *has* failed in its current and probably most past forms. But, I don't think buddhahood and sainthood come from pure sociopathic social gaming.

Nor are they purely naive, scattershot extrapolation. There's a thing, there. The path is fraught, for the individual and the community. But there's a thing, there, and we shouldn't give up on it. Maybe emphasize its asymptotic, patchily and nonmonotonically approached nature.

You seem to be talking about nothing more than trying to be a better person. Which is of course a worthy ideal.

That's right. But, there's a caricature of the meditator obsessively meditating to become a better person while only becoming more neurotic and dangerous, even as they touch emptiness, nonduality, whatever.

And I'm saying that meditation does not have to be quasi-orthogonal to becoming a better person, that the meditator can meditate to directly become a better person without falling into that caricature. But the methods need to be clarified.

Instead of saying "meditation can't do that; use different tools; if anyone claims it can they are mistaken, possibly self-harming, and/or social gaming" I'm saying, let's fix the popular conception of meditation, because it can be used for things besides nondual-only.

There’s probably a limit to what meditation can do, even radically re-conceived, outside of some relational context, which it seems to me remains pretty under-theorized.

Very agreed. Lineages and transmission for a reason.
