Well said, Nancy, thank you for your intervention. As a Brit, I say we should never risk the peace in Ireland.

Why is it risking peace? Can someone tell me that. Can I also point out that WTO does not need a hard border. Only the EU will insist on it. The UK were looking to have zero tariffs on most goods in case of a no deal Brexit. Project fear
-
Sure, it's because the Good Friday Agreement relied upon an open border between the north and south. That was a compromise for the Republicans in the north & in return, they ended their armed campaign. The peace is extremely fragile but the GFA is holding it together.
-
Very nice of them republicans to stop killing innocents in return for no border yet when there was a border they skipped back and forth at will to avoid prosecution
-
Republicans didn't need to skip over the border, they lived in the North as well. I worked near Oxford Street, London, in those days - heard the bombs, evacuated due to bomb scares, it wasn't just Ireland that suffered but the GFA ended it.
-
It's a disgrace that in this day+ age + in this part of the world, politicians are scared to make decisions in case terrorists get upset + start killing people. Its as if people are already getting their excuses in now for any terrorism. It should not be expected or tolerated.
-
Kind of amazing that you are even commenting on the GFA with such a gung-ho stance - as it is one of the most incredible diplomatic, face-saving political compromises ever conceived.

Never forget the Irish armed forces were the USA's biggest military Allies in Gulf 1, Iraq & Afghanistan! Glad the Irish MI5, MI6, GCHQ, Scotland Yard, etc. work with the FBI and CIA to defeat terrorists and Russian subversion of USA. Steele was Irish too right? F.O. Nancy!!
-
You do know Rep of Ireland is not a part of Great Britain right? Also the Irish army are peace keepers for the UN and not active in foreign wars. MI5 MI6 etc are all British organisations...Now..what are you trying to say?
-
You do know The North of Ireland is not in any part of Britain, right? It is Irish, was always Irish and those who live in Northern Ireland are automatically entitled to hold Republic of Ireland Passports.
-
My understanding is that under the Good Friday Agreement people in Northern Ireland can identify themselves as both Irish and British and can hold either/both passports and now that is also under threat from brexit

I think that given that the Europeans are receiving so much unsolicited advice from Donald Trump we democrats should refrain from getting involved in this tragedy. The UK is our closest ally and we should work with whatever situation they find themselves in with grace.
-
You do not understand the history behind this..There were centuries of foreign occupation from Britian in Ireland.Ireland wanted its independence back so that caused centuries of bloody conflict btwn UK and Ireland. Good Friday Agreement is peace treaty signed by UK and Ireland
-
Be that as it may, the position of the United States should be to not get involved in the internal affairs of th EU—Britain’s historical crimes against Ireland notwithstanding.
-
Be that as it may: we in the Democratic Party in the US also need to have an internal conversation about US foreign policy—and this democrat is opposed to a democratic speaker of the house threatening the UK on Twitter over Brexit.
-
But you as a democrat are ok about an ally breaching a peace treaty that ended 700 years of conflict. Ireland was not responsible for brexit yet it will be greatly negatively affected by it as will the peace treaty which in fact has already been breached by UK.
-
I am simply not OK with the United States intervening in the Brexit process either internally within the UK or in the EU-UK negotiations (such as they are). Brexit is a mess all around but it is for the Europeans to work it out. US-UK relations are broader than Brexit.
