At President Kennedy’s inauguration, I heard him speak of ‘the energy, the faith, the devotion…that will light our country and all who serve it – and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.’ It is inspiring that the award itself is a manifestation of that light.
That energy, faith and fire have inspired my work in the Congress and as Speaker, and it is my hope that my receiving this award will encourage others to pursue public service, and lead with courage, conviction and conscience.
Madam Speaker I had the pleasure of your introducing a press conf panel I served on in 1990 after I returned from a human rights mission to El Salvador. Congratulations on this award and thank you for your leadership...and for having the the courage to be in the arena.
