Security clearances should be on an as needed basis only. Once out of the role that required the clearance, there is no reasonable reason why anyone should keep their security clearance.

These are typically apolitical career civil servants and experts in their respective fields. They maintain clearance when the government needs to tap into that expertise and read them into a situation or crisis at the highest levels. It serves a vital purpose.

The government can grant a security clearance again if needed. A blanket policy of keeping active security clearances for people who no longer have a valid need is itself a security risk.

From what I understand, individuals with that level of experience and have held those positions are never really retired. In previous administrations, they have been called on quite a bit from leaders of both parties. They called continue to serve, just quietly.

I don’t see how an Administration that doesn’t bother to put policies in place to prevent a terminated employee from bringing an unsecured mobile phone into the White House Situation Room to secretly record conversations has any competence to identify security threats.
