They usually land the first stage on a droneship or on a landing pad but for whatever reason they decided not to save the stage

Heavy payloads and/or high final orbits won't leave the first stage with enough fuel to return.

Neither was the case here. This was the second flight of this booster for the same customer on an identical mission, they obviously landed it last time, but it's an old design and they have too many of them in storage already. So they threw it in the sea!

The rumor has it that the drone ship is damaged and thus could not participate in this mission. Other than that, the first stage flew most of the usual return flight:https://twitter.com/generuso/status/944634382341558272 …

It's contribution to global warming is fairly minimal. The fuel is the same as a jetliner, but the trip is over in a few minutes. Tesla and Solarcity offset the emissions hundreds of times over.

Tesla and SpaceX are very good in terms of how much they contribute to GW, their CO2 emissions are low and by reusing most of their rockets they aren’t polluting the ocean and land as much as NASA would. Also the Tesla vehicles are the pinnacle of Eco Friendly.
