why do you static fire the first stage? Doesn't it add stress to the engines? You don't static fire the second stage!

No more stress than normal. The engines aee test fired before being mounted anyway. Just making sure there's no spontaneous combustion.

The engines are fired multiple times during testing, SpaceX uses the same engines on reused launches, they can withstand hundreds of fires
