        to reach the geostationary transfer orbit (read: really high) they need every last drop of fuel from the first stage.

        However, three was enough fuel to do a short re-entry burn from a high speed. Info learned will help recovery of falcon heavy booster later.

        As previously mentioned the first stage booster was never intended to land. It didn't even have legs installed.
