Today's @SpaceX announcement is exciting -- I can't wait to see what future Mars missions it leads to, both scientific and human exploration

Opening Mars to private exploration makes it all the more urgent that we land and collect pristine Mars samples as soon as possible.
-
Fortunately, Mars 2020 is being built just in time to collect pristine samples, and
@SpaceX takes planetary protection seriously (I asked). -
How could a Red Dragon launch in 2018 eventually lead to humans on Mars? Here's The Planetary Society's vision:http://hom.planetary.org/

So, we can assume
@SpaceX will use a Falcon Heavy and some variant of Dragon for their first Mars mission. VERY doable!

@elonmusk: How 'bout going full circle & send your garden to Mars after all... on you're own LV & spacecraft!

BTW: It's just a tweet, not worth writing 140 words over (but I know you'll do it anyways ;) )

@John_Gardi@SpaceX@b0yle@orwigwrites@NASAWatch Hey John , explain Red dragons?! -
@repaveli_p 'Red Dragon' is '@SpaceX speak' for a Dragon capsule modified to orbit and/or land on Mars.@b0yle@orwigwrites@NASAWatch -
@repaveli_p It wouldn't take much to mod Dragon 2. They'd need more fuel (so not as much room for cargo). Different parachute(s) for sure.
-
@John_Gardi Wow, 2018 is so soon! How exciting
-
@repaveli_p They have all the bits 'n' pieces needed already: Falcon boosters, Dragon capsules. Still to be tested: Falcon Heavy, Dragon 2. -
@John_Gardi ...and they can put little robot inside dragon just for fun
with cameras on it .. -
@repaveli_p A small rover would be a great cargo for#SpaceX#RedDragon (and why not make it biped?). - 1 more reply
