Humans ♥️ Earth🌎 The cardiovascular system has evolved to operate in Earth’s gravity. Because spending time in space affects the human heart and circulatory system, quite a bit of research conducted aboard the looks at these effects.

Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques performs an ultrasound for Vascular Echo, one of three Canadian experiments in the Vascular series, which study the effects of weightlessness on astronauts’ blood vessels and hearts aboard the International Space Station.

The Techshot Biofabrication Facility aims to print organ-like tissues, which could one day lead to 3D printing human organs in space for transplants on the ground. Since Earth’s gravity makes printing these structures difficult, the space environment may be key!

Astronauts exercise rigorously daily to prevent some of the impacts that microgravity can have on their health. 🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♂️ Laura Bollweg & Peter Norsk detail what these impacts are and what we’re doing to prevent them on this week’s “Houston, We Have a Podcast.”

Without gravity and exercise, an astronaut’s cardiovascular system may get weaker 🏃‍♀️ -- decreasing their health, and potentially causing problems on long-duration missions. The Human Research Program studies how exercise can help lessen this risk:
