Random trivia: Earth's mass is 5.9722±0.0006 × 1e27 g. That uncertainty? 6e23 g. Ceres's mass is 9e23. We only know the Earth's mass to plus or minus Ceres. That's because we only know the gravitational constant to 6-digit accuracy.

Phone banking is a cool thing to do if you ever want to realize just how many men do not want you to talk to their wives about politics

Odds are that when you buy your next car, EVs will be a plausible option to consider. Start keeping track of how often you drive more than 100, 200, or 300 miles in a day. It will help gauge whether an is practical for you, what range you need, and what charger.

I am disspointed in people who have learned about ISO 8601 date formats (YYYY-MM-DD) and not immediately realized it's superiority to all other formats and started using it immediately.

This type of chart (is there a name for it?) is an important part of any forecast document, but not produced often enough. Is the forecasting organization or method any good at forecasting?

Friends, it's a demoralizing day for our democracy, so I'm gonna tell you a quick story that will hopefully cheer you up and put things in perspective. It's about the simultaneous absurdity and rage and beauty of our democratic system. Let me take you back to 1789. (thread)

Concluding that the President does use the power of his office to cheat at elections, but that we should rely on the results of the next election to see if the voters want to do anything about it is a remarkable take.

In the 1970s, the Denver Natural History Museum created a planetarium show of Isaac Asimov’s The Final Question, narrated by Leonard Nimoy. For his 100th birthday, the recreated it for modern equipment. Fun to see trippy 1970s art & soundtrack + some modern CGI.

After 16+ years of lifting the veil on hidden objects in nearly every corner of the universe, ends its mission today. The team should be proud of this transformational journey that continued 11+ years beyond prime mission:

I like data. I think having data is vital to addressing social problems. But a graph of maternal deaths that circulated on Twitter this week shows the limits of trusting numbers too much. Precision creates an illusion of accuracy and that can be dangerous. 1/12

Was scolded by a stranger this morning for walking my toddler to daycare in the cold (0 degrees). The stranger then said to my toddler that they were sorry I was making her walk in the cold. Toddler responded: "the cold never bothered me anyway," and walked away. Parent win.
