in 2006, the crew released a spare spacesuit - naming it SuitSat-1 - into orbit around the Earth. The Russian Orlan spacesuit was equipped with a radio transmitter so radio amateurs on Earth could tune in to this space signal.

There's a tendency in Twitter and parts of the community at large to create camaraderie by pointing out other's flaws or bad operation habits. It's unhelpful to the hobby because it turns off new people from joining who feel like they are or might be the target of it.

If I may brag, I just got an email from someone at University of Washington who is involved with the HuskySat-1 project who said my videos were a pleasure to watch. What a great way to end the weekend.

I think she was reassured by that because so many people just use smart phones and don't know or care how technology works.

She knew what Doppler shift was and had seen satellites in the night sky in summers in Minnesota. After talking for a while she said there must be a whole community of young people like me into sats.

Of all the passerbys I have talked to about ham radio sats, Jean, who saw me RXing HuskySat-1, was by far the most interested. We talked for 30 minutes. She alluded to the space race and said she was really happy to see young people were into space even today.

in 2003 the community lost seven astronauts of STS-107 when Columbia broke apart upon re-entry. Take a moment today to remember these brave souls.

HuskySat-1/??/USB First decodes of this bird and it wasn't difficult. Got the tracking data from ISS Detector and the doppler correction was done by hand (see upper left corner). Good SNR, but the birds seems to spin a bit. Got 33 frames decoded.
