You can protect against this with some HDDs and some backup equipment in a Faraday cage. There are also special archival optical media that are meant to last longer than regular versions.

I was just thinking of this today. Information is fragile and most storing technology is impermanent and also dependant on a continious input of vast amounts of energy. All information is also lost if one loses the know how of how to decode information, like different filesystems
