If they're like my kids, SPS gave them a one-day paper ORCA card that covers today. It's good to remind folks how the system works. And officers have discretion to issue warnings instead of fines.
Warnings should be fallback, not discretion. Or not even "warnings," but just say, "Okay, make sure to stop by the office and get your ORCA today, thanks for riding."
Your absolutely right. This is a good reminder of how the system works: if youโre young, Black or Brown, or donโt have a lot of money, then you will be harassed & intimidated by the system.
There are 150 homeless kids at my school who might not have gotten that pass in the mail.
This is the most ridiculous possible day to do enforcement. It discourages ridership. Do you know how many kids in SPS are homeless or move during the summer? It's also a terrible waste to issue a new card instead of rolling over the year's before.
This initial reply was insensitive and way off the mark. We (I) apologize and hope that our later tweets helped officially clear up what was and was not happening on Link today regarding fare enforcement.
fare enforcement is a racist, classist, pointless effort that doesnโt save you any money and disproportionately targets folks that face enough problems. youโre not even losing revenue here. also how often does โofficerโ discretion = racist selective enforcement? do you know?
