Learning Japanese is not a competition. But maybe it would be more fun if it was.

I often find myself treating it as a competition in my head, and in my experience that seems to take a lot of the fun out of it. I think language learning is most fun when it's an intimate exploratory process that's just between you and the language.
100% agree with this. I find myself comparing to other people: how far I am vs them in same time frame. Then I stress out. Then I remember that I'm learning it not to be better than someone else, but to explore Japan. Take my time, watch shows, talk to my friends. Fun again.
