    It’s very hot and dry and there are a lot of fires igniting all over California, so I’m re-upping this guide from last year about how to prepare kids for fires (and earthquakes), and how to talk about them after they happen.

    Beautifully written, reported and filmed. From one father whose son remains in a Chicago shelter: “They tricked me. They said they would give him back to me when I was to be deported and they didn’t. I want my son back. They did this to punish me. Those people are awful.”

    This thread sums up why I've struggled in recent years to recommend Metpro, a program that brought me to the , to other young journalists of color. It also illustrates why I'm hopeful about its future. Proud to have worked on this proposal.

    An initiative billed as a training program has to offer *training.* Young journalists of color need mentorship and support. Hiring them at lower wages to do the same work as anyone else in the newsroom while leaving them to sink or swim is exploitation.

    As a former Metpro, I believe in the value of a program that trains diverse journalists. It makes our newsroom better. But Metpro can’t continue in its current form. To become the prestigious fellowship it was designed to be, the program needs an overhaul:
