Not a fan of relying on audits, but I can tell you that audits should be an ongoing process. Not that once you have audited and that's it, you're safe. Because that's how you get hacked in a hypothetical v1.1. But ongoing audits, sounds costly.
In most projects the bulk of the work is up-front. Once the ‘core’ audit is done on-going audits on smaller code deltas are comparatively less expensive. Treasury can be planned to factor costs. Community should continue to review and can be first-pass. Audit is final assurance.
