Still waiting for @youtube to fix their apps after the last Android update. My phone shouldn't lose connection with Chromecast just by turning off my screen.
No, I already HAVE YouTube Premium. I clearly said CHROMECAST which has nothing to do with background play. I'm glad that I know more about your products than you do.

My phone is also disconnecting from my
@Chromecast as soon as I lock it. Makes skipping a video in my queue or changing the Chromecast volume impossible unless I unlock and reconnect. (And I'm also a YouTube Premium user) -

Ah, we get it. Have you already tried resetting the app on your Chromecast device? Here's how: Settings> Reset app. Also we recommend uninstalling the app updates> restarting your Android device> updating the app. This should fix most intermittent issues. Keep us posted.
