A VBIED was detonated in front of the popular Hotel known as “Hotel Elite” at Liido beach in Mogadishu. Following the explosion, armed gunmen stormed the building and there is currently a gunfight under way inside the hotel. I’ll update as details come in.pic.twitter.com/S49CXtbJvA
This particular attack does seem to be very strange. Usually hotels attacked by Al Shabaab are hotels which house politicians or ministers, this hotel is filled with youth. The only possible motive is that the hotel owners refused to pay tax to AS, and this is their punishment.
Update: I’ve just received word that the first known fatality is Abdirizak Abdi, the Director of Regional Relations of the Ministry of Information. Galmudug’s Minister of Public Works and Housing, Ahmed Washington has also been wounded and transported to the hospital.pic.twitter.com/CUoAfUQueq
2 of the armed gunmen believed to be Al Shabaab have been shot dead by the security forces.
